Ropai Jatra: A Celebration of Rice Planting in Nepal
Nestled in the Himalayas, Nepal is a land where agriculture reigns supreme. Rice, the staple food for most Nepalis, is cultivated with immense care and dedication. To mark the culmination of rice seedling transplantation, a vibrant festival called Ropai Jatra is celebrated with gusto across the country.
Ropai Jatra, which translates to "rice planting festival" in Nepali, typically falls in Asar (mid-June to mid-July) during the monsoon season. This coincides with the busiest period for farmers, who work tirelessly to prepare their fields and plant the young rice shoots.
A Tradition Steeped in History
The origins of Ropai Jatra can be traced back to 1972 BS (around 1815 AD) with Colonel Gajraj Singh Thapa, the then Governor of Illam district. He, along with the Nepal Bhasa Society, is credited with promoting this agricultural ritual across Nepal.
